Why You Need to Consider Freezing Semen for Your Stud NOW

Freezing your dog is part of a thoughtful, intentional and responsible breeding program. It is not about expecting the worst, rather it is about protecting everything you have worked so hard to build and preserving options for yourself and your clients for the future.

I would like to breakdown some reasons that freezing your dog, regardless of where he is at in his career, is an essential part of any program. Cryopreservation gives breeders control, flexibility and long-term security.

  • A proven or promising stud

Preserve genetics now, before injury, illness, or age limits future breeding. If you have a sire you have kept from frequently or built your lines off of, freezing semen allows you the option to breed back to that sire in the future and bring the genetics back to the front of the pedigree, whether he is still alive and or producing or not.

  • Rare, imported, or hard-to-replace lines

Frozen semen protects valuable bloodlines and allows future access without repeated travel or stress. If you are planning to use a stud from overseas, importing the semen NOW and storing it allows you to skip the stress of the customs processes when you’re on the clock and ensure that it is ready and waiting for your breeding.

  • Medical procedures or entering a higher-risk phase of life

Elective surgery, injury, or even aging can impact fertility. Freezing early gives peace of mind.

  • Competing, traveling, or actively working

Field trials, sport, conformation shows and travel and work carry risks. Cryopreservation ensures genetics are preserved regardless of circumstance. If your dog is traveling and under stress or not able to collect while on the road for shows, having frozen as a backup for your clients is essential.

  • Young and healthy

The best time to freeze semen is before you need it. Younger dogs often produce higher-quality collections with better long-term viability. No one can predict long term fertility or accidents and illness that can affect fertility.

Arizona based professional canine semen freezing, on site long term storage and other reproductive care in the Arizona desert
  • The most important one for my locals- YOU LIVE IN FREAKING ARIZONA!

The Arizona desert heat brings unique risks with the extreme summer heat. Power outages, air conditioning failures, and changes in daily routines (like kids being home on summer break, dog sitters, etc) can all contribute to situations that can escalate quickly and sometimes completely without warning. Each year, tragic accidents and unforeseen events result in the loss of dogs, even in the most careful programs. Freezing semen before the hottest months helps safeguard your program in the event of the unexpected.

  • Part of a thoughtful breeding program

Freezing semen allows flexibility with timing, pairing decisions, and long-term program planning. Ideally, you should have a breeding unit in storage for every lock-in or paid in full credit you have, plus a couple extras for self use.

About Me

My name is Sara Frisby and I am the owner and operator of Prickly Pear Canine.

You may know me or recognize me from my other "Prickly Pear" brand things.

Prickly Pear Kennels is my breeding program. I have been breeding dogs for over a decade. I began my program with Great Danes before transitioning to French Bulldogs about 7 years ago. It was always my dream to own the two but restrictions on space in the area we live made the long term success of Frenchies much more achievable than the Great Danes. I still have my foundation Great Dane mama, Zoey, who has long since been retired and is living the high life as the "protector." What started as a passion for breeding evolved into a deeper commitment to reproductive education and preservation as I experienced firsthand how limited access to quality reproductive care can be in Arizona.

In 2019, I trained with a reproductive clinic based in Cave Creek, Arizona, gaining hands on experience and foundational knowledge in canine reproductive care. My intention at the time was to be able to maximize success in my own program and save myself some time and the headache of dragging 2 kids under 2 and a giant breed dog to the vet. Many veterinarians, then and now, either do not offer reproductive care at all or it is not a focus of their practice, leaving breeders without meaningful guidance. Recognizing this gap, I set out to thoroughly educate myself to better serve myself and eventually my community.

I later trained with one of the most successful and leading cryopreservation specialists in the United States to learn the freezing process and expand my knowledge. After witnessing the devastating impact of the extreme heat on dogs in Arizona, receiving increased inquiries from my clients, and navigating the requirements for importing and exporting semen internationally, it became clear to me that this service was critically needed here.

Today, I am proud to be the only site in Arizona offering semen freezing and long term storage all here on site, providing breeders reliable access to professional cryopreservation services without the need to go through a middle man, saving time and money.

I am a born and raised Arizona native and mother of 4. When I am not working, you will find me outside, spending time with my kids and my dogs.

I am so excited to work with you all and help build this community here.
